The McCarthy’s Story
The McCarthy name has been well known in the Jupiter / Tequesta area since 1975.
Marilyn McCarthy’s father, Arthur Watson, had been the executive chef on the prestigious Cunard Line, which was founded in 1840.
During World War II, he was called on to teach military cooks for the big troop ships how to prepare food for the huge amount of service people who would be traveling on the ship.
John and Marilyn McCarthy met in the restaurant business and opened their own restaurant in 1975 called Wayside Inn (the old Sondy’s Restaurant) on US1. It was a family business, with son Brendon, daughter Kathleen, and Marilyn’s brother Bill all working to make the restaurant a success.
In 1983, McCarthy’s took over a former restaurant in the Lighthouse Plaza on Tequesta Drive and named it Fireside Inn. In 1986, with Marilyn’s brother Bob, a second Fireside Inn was opened in The Bluffs. The Bluffs location was sold in 1988 and the Fireside Inn became the infamous McCarthy’s. The restaurant built up a huge following and in 1995 the McCarthy family built McCarthy’s Pub on Tequesta Drive, which is now Tiramisu.
The McCarthy family, including Brendon, delighted diners until 2005, when John, Marilyn and Brendon decided to retire and sell the business.
In 2015, Brendon McCarthy was eager to open a new McCarthy’s Pub in County Line Plaza in Tequesta. The response was overwhelming from both customers and staff.
Recipes from Brendon’s grandfather, Arthur Watson, are still being used today. Chicken Pot Pie, Homemade Rolls and Scones, Shepherds Pie, and Irish Stew are just to name a few.
Brendon wanted a place for people to meet and greet friends. A place where everybody is a local. Where there are no strangers, only friends who haven’t met yet.
And of course, what would an Irish pub be without Guinness and Smithwick’s Irish Ale.
Look forward to seeing you and your family at McCarthy’s Pub.
